creating new templates

i have read for a few hours and cant seem to find any help
i'm trying to create a new template.

i've gone here /public_html/includes/templates/
and created a new folder but it keeps saying:
Creation of /home/chandras/public_html/includes/templates failed because File exists in /home/chandras/public_html/includes/templates

but it doesn't exist anywhere.
what am i doing wrong?
am i not in the right folder?

Try refreshing your FTP ...

And be sure to include the name of the directory you are trying to create ... the error message looks like it is blank ...

yeah, i did that.
over and over.
it has the same message when i leave it blank.
i cant seem to find whats wrong.

IF you are in an FTP program and want to make a new directory ...

In mine, I click right ... say Make Folder (this may read Make New Directory, etc.) ... and a box pops up where I type in the name of the directory ... then click Okay ...

The other way is if the New Directory is already on my Computer ... I go to where I want to load that ... such as

/public_html/catalog/includes/templates

and highlight my template to copy:
c:\internet\websites\includes\templates

And click on the directory I want to copy to my site, example: fredsfiles

And copy that to my server ...

Note: check the permissions or chmod on the /templates directory ... make sure that is set to 755 so you can make new directories etc.

the directory is at 777 i cant get it to 755.
i can get it to 766 or 744.
my friend installed zen for me so none of my files are on my computer.
could i put them on my computer?

on mine you cant right click anything, there's a box where you fill in the name you want.
or atleast thats how i thought it worked.

X what i just said, i'm going to try and use ftp to create a new folder.

Thanks for the update ...

You really want a copy of your site on your computer that you maintain and upload changes to your site ...

Otherwise ... when your site blows up ... you will have nothing except perhaps a database ...

You can download the current v1.3.0.2 ... I am assuming that is what your friend installed ...

Or, download your site to your computer into a directory such as:

c:\internet\my_webiste

Or something you will remember and be able to find easily ...

NOTE: changes should always be made via a good TEXT editor and not through something like your Control Panel, MS Word or other word processor software ...
