How can I remove the newproducts box and text from the homepage?
Also where can I get links so that I can in my template have the header link to the different categories of items?

The answer to your first question is Admin > Tools > layout Box Settings from which you can control which sideboxes are turned on and off.

The answer to your second question is that this is normally turned on by default. If it's not for you, then they are called Category Tabs and can be turned on from Admin > Configuration > Layout Settings (3rd option from the bottom)

BTW: a more descriptive thread title than "newbie help" would help others with the same question to find the answers more quickly. Nevertheless, welcome to Zen Cart.

all the sideboxes are off but I still see the page.

Ahh. There are two new product boxes. The sidebox and the one in the center. I should have checked which you wanted to turn off. For the one in the center go to Admin > Configuration > Index Listing. Set the value of the 1st, 5th, 9th and 13th entries to 0.

i don't see index listing under admin - configuration

If you're using a current version of Zen Cart i.e. 1.3+ then it's the third entry from the bottom
