Duplicating Categories and subcategories

I have a question on how zencart is set up to get the info from the database.

If I need to have the categories and all associated subcategories is there a function that I call(If so how would I do that) or do I get it from the database directly- This is what I am trying to do but running into problems getting the subcategories?

zen_get_categories
