Product listing sort options in admin

In Admin > Configuration > Product Listing
the following admin entries exist.

Unfortunately after reading the comments for each of these entries I still don't comprehend how the settings apply.

Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Product Listing Default sort order?

NOTE: Leave Blank for Product Sort Order. Sort the Product Listing in the order you wish for the default display to start in to get the sort order setting.
Example: 2a

Product Listing Ascending Sort Order
What do you want to use to indicate Sort Order Ascending?
Default = +

---
Product Listing Descending Sort Order
What do you want to use to indicate Sort Order Descending?
Default = -

Anyone point me to more details on how to apply the above? Thanks.
