Download options mess

I know there's 17 different threads on this, because I've read them, and I'm still confused.
Can I run this by someone and see what's right? or is there a step-by-step guide to this somewhere?

1 - create product, zip it, put it in mystore/downloads

2 - go to option name manager, call it downloads, type radio, insert

3 - I've been setting the category to Document-General - but everytime I go back to check, its set to products General - not sure what's going on there

4 - went to my product, clicked the A for attributes

5 - option value still says TEXT - even through I said radio...

6 - put in my file name anyway

7 - got error back at top of file - Attribute Option and Option Value Do NOT Match - Attribute was not added - : TEXT

still not sure how that works for downloadable only products

8 - went to catalog, option value manager - and can't for the life of me figure out what option values make sense

I think part of my problem is that all we offer are documents - either free or fee - so I'm confused by the options
I don't need to give the customer options - the product is just going to be downloaded

and I know there's then something to do with the download manager, but not sure about that either.

Is there a step-by-step somewhere on how to do this?

NO, folder should be named download NOT downloads

Should choose radio option from dropdown box provided.

option value still says TEXT - even through I said radio...

You typed radio and did not choose that option from dropdown box.
All products offered for download should be placed in individual zip files.
Zip file best named all in lower case, without hyphens.

yes, the folder is download

after typing an option name, I selected "radio" from the dropdown

do I do anything in the option value screen?

I just feel like I'm getting more and more lost.

You have something setup incorrectly ...

The Option Name needs to be Option Type:
Radio button
Dropdown

Then, you need to add Option Value(s) to the Option Type via the Option Value Manager ...

Then, you add the Attribute to the Product by picking the Option Name and Option Value ... and include the download filename ...

Note: do not include the path to the filename the path is by default the /download which is currently the only location for the download filenames to be located ...

ok - so

make new option name

for the option name type in "Option Type"

and in the dropdown, select Radio

or... are you saying that in the option name area is where I tell it what option type, and in the field for "Option Type" I should type in Radio
and in the drop down, select Radio

I'm so sorry - I feel like I'm just missing a concept here.

In the Option Name Manager ...
You made an Option Name called: Downloads

You selected from the Option Type Dropdown either Radiobutton or Dropdown

Next you go to the Option Value Manager ...

For the Option Name, select Downloads (the one you just made)

Type in an Option Value Name: Zip File (or something that means something to you)

You go then to the Attributes Controller and find your Product ...

You add the Attribute by selecting the:
Option Name: Downloads
Option Value: Zip File (or whatever you called it)
You type in the Download filename, example: test.zip

Next you FTP to the /download directory the download filename: test.zip

ok - I'm closer.
is there a reason the radio button has to show up on the product page, or the checkout area?
there's not really anything they're selecting - digital is just the only option there is

For now ... that is how the attributes work and the customer goes to the product _info page to make the selection ... even when there is only 1 to pick from ...

ok - then maybe I should make that the default choice, on the attribute screen?

and - this is only sort of related.... how does one handle inventory for this? there's only one in stock, but it doesn't matter how many times we're downloading it, its not going away

As a Radiobutton, you do need to set the default ...

At this time, downloads do not have an inventory ... we will be looking into this for a future release ...
