Problem with coupon discounts

Hi guys, im new to the ecommerce business. My designer built my site and now im putting the rest of it together. im creating some coupons and they are working fine but the problem im having is that when a % discount is applied it is taken from the whole amount. let me put it this way. I buy a product for $1 and add 22% margin so the product sells for $1.22 plus taxes. if i create a coupon that gives 20% discount it is calculating the sale price to be $0.98c. is there a way to set the cost price of a product and only give discount on the profit made?
