product goes offline when zero

Am I correct in understanding that when you have the default settings for the products as such:

Product Qty Minimum: 1
Product Qty Maximum: 0
Product Qty Units: 1
Product Qty Min/Unit Mix: No


ZenCart's default behavior is to take the product offline when someone buys the last one?

To keep it showing with "out of stock" button:
Is the remedy then to set the minimum qty to zero like this:

Product Qty Minimum: 0
Product Qty Maximum: 0
Product Qty Units: 0
Product Qty Min/Unit Mix: No

When you have your Configuration ... Stock ... set to set the Products Status to 0 or OFF ... then it goes away ...

Set that to leave the Status to 1 or ON and show the Sold out ... then it won't go away ...


Note: these have nothing to do with In Stock or Out of Stock ...
Minimim = lowest qty you sell per order
Maximum = highest qty you sell per order
Units = number of units to buy in ... example 2 means

Quantity 2, 4, 6, 8 etc.

Another thing happening:

by ordering four when only 2 are in stock it implies that all are backordered.

If you do not want people to order more than is in stock ... turn off the ability in the Configuration ... Stock ... settings ...

I can accomodate backorders pretty easily in most cases so I would like it to say:

4 in cart, 2 on back order...or create an option so they can check off if they want it that way.

Would this require some core code modifications?

You would need to customize the code to do this ...

Currently, a standard message is displayed when the quantity being ordered is greater than what is in stock ...

You would need to make this more specific ...

It is not difficult to do, you just need to work through the code to do it ...

I can see some complications with this option if two people are filling their cart at the same time. Once someone gets to the checkout the other cart would show all backordered. Will think on this and monitor such things as we go.
