Complicated Shipping Quesion - Combos

Hi,

I have a question concerning scripting to calculate shipping cost. I would like to be able to set a range of different combos.

For example. Right now, I want to use a shipping scheme that charges $12.50 for the first item, plus $2.50 for each additional product.

However, this would only apply to the main products which are quite heavy. I also sell a small replacement lockring which cost only $0.59 and weighs less than a gram so I really don't want the client to have to pay an addition $2.50 for this item. It should be free shipping.

Now, before you say "just set the free-shipping setting" for the little lockring, I have to be careful. Some clients purchase these later on. In this case, I still need to be able to charge them for the cost of a stamp.

Do these kinds of dynamic shipping calculations have to be written in code, or is there a way to do it with Zencart? I ask because I have zero experience with anything except for HTML, and even after lots of forum browsing and FAQ reading, I still can't figure out the hierarchy or the Zencart files (ie - which files do what and to whom).

Set them up as Always Free Shipping ...

This means on mixed orders, no charge happens

On Free Shipping orders ... those where all products are Always Free Shipping ...

Then, setup the Free Shipping freeshipper Shipping Module to have a Handling Fee ...

Then, change the text of the Free Shipping freeshipper Shipping Module to read Handling Fee or something of that nature ...
