Default Managing 100's of thousands of images

Hello! I looked through the FAQ and searched the forums and didn’t find an answer. I apologize in advance if I missed one.

I am currently building a site that will quickly balloon up to having 10's of thousands of images and with a possibility of 100k + images to the same number of products. One thing I have seen is using the built in Admin>Catalog>Categories/Products will not handle adding pictures well. The requestor takes a file from the local HD and puts it to a folder selected in the drop down. This surely works fine when dealing with a few dozen or even hundred pics, but becomes scary when dealing 100K. I really need to have several thousand folders in a neat subfolder tree.

Unless I missed something, I do not see a way to add a web address while using Admin>Catalog>Categories/Products interface. I could manually FTP everything but at the moment it looks like I'd have to add the product image to the Products Description box, which would not give a clean implementation as intended with thumbnail, med and large pics.

Am I making sense? I hope so. I guess I am asking for suggestions. Are there any mods to allow easy subdirectories from the Admin>Catalog>Categories/Products pull down? Or is there an easy way to allow the adding of a image link instead of drawing from the local HD?

    Thank you in advance.

manually upload your images, into the folder structure you want them in
then use easy populate for for uploading products and categories as a csv file

Thank you for the response, I was unaware of easy populate. I've installed it and spent the last several hours trying it out, kicking the tires. It looks like it could be a very useful tool, but in my circumstance I don't think it will be a good fit for my needs.

What it looks like I could use is a modifcation to remove the product image upload form in category/product and replace it with a line to add a web lin to the image.

I would think this would be a fairly easy mod for someone familiar with PHP? Anyone reading this capable of throwing together a few replacement lines of PHP code for me? I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount..
