Timeout when selecting Catagory

When I click on any of the catagory names, the browser just sits and churns away until it eventually times out, and the following appears in apache's error log:

[Fri Aug 4 17:01:48 2006] [notice] child pid 95411 exit signal Illegal instruction (4)

However, I can click on single items and view them fine.

I tried upgrading to the latest version, and also moving everything to another fresh server, same results.

Any ideas?

Edit: I upped the timeout in Apache so now I can get this error:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /disk/popfuel.com/store/includes/modules/product_listing.php on line 100

Sounds like a problem with this block - from the mentionned file above:

I doubt it has much to do with any of your files. Don't go adjusting code.

It's more likely a problem with your database.

1. You said you upgraded. Please explain exactly what you did to upgrade.
2. Did these problems exist before the upgrade?
3. When did these problems start in relationship to other things happening to your site/server/etc?
4. Does your admin area run smoothly? esp in the Admin->Catalog->Categories/Products pages ?

1. To upgrade, I went from 1.3.0 to the current release by unzipping the full fileset into the directory and running the zc_install again, which upgraded the existing database.
2. Yes, they existed before the upgrade. It's what prompted the upgrade.
3. I had some test products in place for setup purposes, and I deleted them, and added new real products. It started after that.
4. Admin->Catalog->Categories/Products page work fine.

By the sound of how you did your upgrade, I would suggest the following:

1. Upload a fresh copy of the newest Zen Cart files to your server ... in a new folder
2. Run the install ... into a new database
3. now you have a clean install with no customizations.
4. Create the products again
5. Test whether you encounter the same error.
6. If the error/timeout doesn't occur, then begin re-applying your customizations to this fresh site.


To do an upgrade, one would normally need to merge customizations from current site with the new version files before uploading. Perhaps you missed something in this process, or perhaps you have consistent FTP timeouts which are corrupting critical files on your server.

The problem with that is that the customizations are extremely extensive - there are at least 7 different add-ons, plus about 20 hours of entering in different tax zones, setting up configs, as well as heavily modified CSS and templating that goes into the code itself. I've paid a web designer a great deal of money to do it.

Starting again from scratch isn't really an option.

It's obviously a database issue, so figuring out what data in the database is causing the issue would be a lot better than being forced to apply all those modifications to new code, which would cost me hundred of dollars in labour. I can do database stuff myself.
