Default can't use Define Pages Editor

On a new, freshly-installed Zen-Cart, I followed the how-to for using a custom template. So far, so good. This Zen-Cart is awesome! But I can't use the Tools > Define Pages Editor to edit the text on the main page.

I carefully followed the Post in the FAQs that explains how to reset permissions for a long list of files, making all of the recommended changes. But still, I get the following error message when i try to use the Tools > Define Pages Editor:

Error: I can not write to this file. Please set the right user permissions on: ***/***/public_html/***/includes/languages/english/html_includes/***/define_main_page.php

(I replaced some characters with *** for privacy.)

If you know how to fix this problem, please enlighten me.

    Thanks...

You need to make the html_includes folder and contents WRITABLE while you are working on these pages. Then you can make them unwritable when you are done editing them.

    Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I have tried that but to no avail. I used cPanel and set the permissions to 777 for all the various files recommended by the Post on the FAQ page.

    Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    You changed the directory:

    /includes/languages/english/html_includes 777

You changed all subdirectories in the directory /includes/languages/english/html_includes to 777

You changed all of the files in all of the subdirectories that are in /includes/languages/english/html_includes to 777

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I changed those things as I thought I was instructed by the FAQ post.

I just twiddled with Permissions a bit more, and am now able to edit the main page text, but still not some other pages. I'll have to twiddle around some more. I think what helped was setting Permissions for individual files to 777. Does that sound right?

I hope to do more than simply "get it right" for this particular store. I hope to learn it well enough to get it right each time I approach this, so i can build other stores in the same manner.

    Thanks.

Yes, if your software didn't let you set the permissions on "files and folders recursively", then it likely wouldn't touch the files "too"... thus you'd have to set it for each file individually. Some tools are smarter than others !
