Can someone please help me with layout?

This is what I'm trying to accomplish (done on another cart):

I had it working with IE on Zen, but it fell apart on both NS & FF. Then I got it working on FF, but it wouldn't work on either IE or NS. Now I can't get it to work on any of them.

If anyone could help, I would sincerely appreciate it. I've been working on this for three days and don't know what else to try.

First the left & right column widths are 150px and left & right aligned respctively...You need to set the l & r column widths for the current margin setting of 35px to 185px(150px + the 35px margin). this is in the admin > layout settings > cloumn width left and the right.
You overlooked this in the last thread
Then see if it renders correctly...

You have mesed up the code for the search thing somehow and is why you are getting the strange text in this area. If I recall correctly this is in english.php.

Thanks for your reply, Kobra. I changed the l & r column width to 185 after reading your post last night, so that's not the problem. I overwrote my english.php file and it didn't change the search box, so I might have changed something else in the core files and that might also be what's causing the other problem. I've worked on it so long that I honestly can't remember what I've done. I think I'll do a reinstall tomorrow (too tired to do it tonight) and start over.

I am looking at this right now and the column l & r are set to 150px.


Also, as I forgot before, you have 2 stylesheets; stylesheet.css and stylesheet3.css.

With this number appended to the end, both are being applied in alpha/numeric sequence. I do not think that this is what you want. make the one that you want stylesheet.css and the other like stylesheet.old this might clear up some of the problems.

BTW: You should be using the over ride system for files that you edit so as not to have to reload when there is a glitch.

I just checked my admin settings again (layout settings). The column width - left & column width - right are both set to 185. I didn't change the column width - left boxes & column width - right boxes. They're both still set to 150. I tried changing them to 185 earlier today and it had no effect. Do I need to also specify a width of 185 on my stylesheet? If so, which do I add it to? Right & left box & headings? Or Column One & Column Two?

I deleted the other stylesheet. It was one I had worked on for hours. I finally gave up and started over & renamed it in case I needed to refer back to it. Never thought about it being read.

I know I should haven't messed with the core files. I jumped into it before I fully understood how the overrides system works.

If you have FireFox and the dev tools...outline the table cells to see that they are not containing the l & r boxes correctly...adjust until they are contained...

Kobra, I finally got it to work. I added a 35px left padding to the #navColumnOne and a 35px right padding to the #navColumnTwo. It seems to be working well in all three browsers. Thanks for your help. The Developers Tools at FF are amazing!

Glad you got it sorted...the Web Dev Tools are a basic essential to styling alteration and really assist in viewing the problems that can ocurr..Glad you like them.
