Parent categories in dropdown filter

My products are listed under two main parent categories
- New Machinery
- Used Machinery

These parent categories both have the following subcategories
- Cylinder Mowers
- Rotary Mowers

When I select a manufacturer from the side box the filtered results can be further filtered by category, however, the parent category is not shown so the dropdown menu shows two of everything.
- Cylinder Mowers
- Cylinder Mowers
- Rotary Mowers
- Rotary Mowers

Is it possible to include the parent category along side the subcategory within the dropdown menu? Like this:

- New Machinery - Cylinder Mowers
- Used Machinery - Cylinder Mowers
- New Machinery - Rotary Mowers
- Used Machinery - Rotary Mowers

I've searched the forum for hours and I can't find anything related to this topic. Can you give me any more clues? Can you remember if a solution was found?

The idea was just add the Manufacture name or parent category to the right of the Category for clarity depending on where it is needed ...
