    Default Order Viewer for Windows

    Hi all,

I've been struggling with a way to allow other employees to have access to order information for some time now. I've decided to take it upon myself to write a little something to help me (and others in my shoes out). So I dove into the world of Visual Basic and MySql integration. Being a C++ guy i'm not enjoying it but I have hacked my way through it. So I am proud to announce the fruits of my labor (all 2 hours of it so far).

Don't expect much yet as I just started working on it this afternoon and I will be updating it daily. As of now you can't do much other than view an order summary (no details yet).

Just kinda wanted to get it out here so that everyone could take a peek and give me some sort of input. Not sure if much demand is out there but I might as well share.

    Enjoy!

    Nice idea!

I'm having problems with connecting. I keep getting denied access, even tho I've verified the correct information. So I figured it was because my webhost provider has a section where it limits outside access in the CPANEL.

So for others out there that can't connect and are using a webhost provider with Cpanel, you need to log into CPanel and goto the MySql Databases section. Then near the bottom you see "Allow Hosts: localhost"... in the text field there, enter % for wildcard to allow all outside connections (not the safest idea to leave it this way tho) .. or type your IP address of your PC. Then you should be able to connect.

    Nice work tho!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

As far as the connection issues...this isn't a problem with the software as you stated. Just a security measure that is standard with MySql. Thanks for posting a quick fix tho.

Right.. sorry to imply that.. I just want people to be able to use your software and dont want them to not use it because of the mysql security if they didn't know better.

Rather than use % and leave your database open to hacking from the whole world, enter just your own IP address.

To find out your own "real" internet IP address, go to http://www.whatismyip.com
Obtain your IP address from that page, and enter it in the cPanel page mentioned.

If you are on a dialup or DSL connection or otherwise haven't got a "static IP", then you may have to repeat this process every time you attempt to connect to the database. While you're at it, remove the old entry from the list!

(DO NOT REMOVE localhost FROM THE LIST OR YOU'LL SHUT DOWN YOUR STORE)

Just an additional note .... what port are you connecting to the database on?
    Are you encrypting this traffic?

If you're not encrypting it, then you're actually doing yourself MORE harm than you're saving. Not only are you disclosing your DATABASE username and password (which is more sensitive than your Admin password IMO), but you're ALSO passing all your customer data across the internet in clear text.

If I was your customer, I would NOT be very happy.

I hope your efforts at time-saving will be supplimented with efforts regarding data-security.
