Add new content to home page only?

Hi,

I'm trying to add a block of content to the bottom of the home page only. I've achieved that by adding to the bottom of tpl_index_categories.php which works fine except for the fact that the content also appears on category pages which contain sub-categories!

Any suggestions how / where I should add this content so that it appears *only* on the home page?

I need to use tpl_index_default.php. I had tried that file but gave up because it didn't affect anything on the home page ... the reason for that is 'Admin ... Configuration ... Layout Settings ... Categories - Always Show on Main Page' must be set to 'false' (the random indecipherable admin dependencies strike again!).
