hehe.. no, I'm never sure of anything. I tried switching to classic and the bug went away. I'm guessing I need to look into what difference there is between my template and the classic template in the side box directories?

I had a copy of the tpl_reviews_random.php file in both my default_template and my custom template sideboxes folder. I compared them with winmerge & then deleted the one in the custom folder (after making a backup of it) and now it's working fine.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
If there's any issues with them, I'll know to check that backup copy to see if there's some info I'm missing.

Thanks for the update ... it always helps others to hear about the final solution and if something was learned in the processes of fixing an issue ...
The ol' override is out of date trick is a common issue where people forget to check are there updates that they need to be aware of ...![]()
