all the modules i am installing say do a back up first so i installed Backup MYSQL and did one . is that enough ? to be honest i have no idea what SQL is ...

SQL is your database. Doing the backup copies all your database contents to a file with a .sql extension.
You still have all your PHP files etc from your "public_html" to backup ... ideally via an FTP program such as FileZilla.
