Your server is apparently configured to disallow the instructions in your /includes/.htaccess file which are intended to prevent would-be hackers/lurkers from snooping around your site.

If you temporarily rename the /includes/.htaccess to htaccess_OFF then you'll likely find that your images and stylesheets show properly again.

Then you'll need to work with your host to find an alternate way of protecting your files. Your host will know why they've prevented you from controlling the security, and should be able to direct you how to do things otherwise.

Thank you very much DrByte, it displays perfectly now. The host charges extra for password protection. I have ordered this now so am hopeful all with work. The host is streamline.net for info. Thans again. Jonathan

I'm not sure you need to purchase password-protection. But then again, every host is different.

I had the same problem after upgrading to 1.3.5. I now have 2 .htaccess files renamed to htaccess_bak (admin & includes) and the site is working ok but I don't understand what to do next - am I able to fix the underlying problem in cpanel and go back to using normal .htaccess files? Or is it ok to leave them as they are?

The two files you have called 'htaccess_bak' are useless and will not be used nor recognized by your Hosting account.

You can setup your own Password protection using the following.

Cpanel > Site Management > Web Protect
    click on the text 'admin'
check the box to the left of the yellow padlock
in the box after 'password mask):' type in: Authorized Access
    click the 'Save' button

Next page has a 'back' link which you click.

Now you're back on the same page as before and will be editting the bottom part.

    User Name:
    Password:

Fill in the boxes for each using 8 characters for each. Then click either of the buttons; Add/Modify or Change Password.
Now you'll see the Username you chose showing in the 'Active Users' list.

Now when you go to http://yoursite.com/admin/ or https://yoursite.com/admin/
you'll get a popup Password window. Enter the Username & Password you setup.

That will put you on the login page for the Admin section which uses the same Username & Password as before.

Thanks Rob. Have done that on the admin directory and all is working well.

The other part of my problem tho, is the .htaccess file in the includes folder which was stopping the styles from loading. It is currently disabled and I'm wondering what I need to do here...obviously I can't password protect it.

My old shop (1.2.6) is running fine with identical .htaccess files which makes me think another file or config setting might be the cause here, not my host. Hopefully there's a way around it.
