Streaming video product

Hey guys,

Given that streaming video is going through the roof at the moment (YouTube, etc..) I'm hoping that someone has already come up with some cool ideas for this..

I want to use streaming videos as products in a zencart store. That it, instead of using zencart to offer the video as a downloadable virtual product, actually use zencart to stream the video from a page that the use can only get to if they've purchased the video. Has anyone thought about doing this? Or better yet come up with a clever solution/mod?

Cheers,

Patrick

Re: Streaming video product

Would love to know more as well!

Have been playing with a redirect to a .html page in the download directory. Have been able to get it to redirect to the html page but it won't play the FLV/SWF file player on the page. It should play just like it does if I direct path it to the page. Any Ideas?

Re: Streaming video product

No sooner than I post my desire to find a way to add Video on Demand (streaming video) to my clients shopping cart and what I had been playing with to get it to work, did I figure it out! WooHoo!

Basically what I did was create a HTML page in the download directory with the SWF and FLV file in the that same directory for the HTML file. I also created the player frame using a program called Wimpy Wasp ($49) you can download from the Internet. Used their customization tool to determine my path, player size and more! Once loaded - presto it worked.

I was also able to set the number of views and how many days the page can be viewed without any file downloads to the end user, all through the Attributes Controller. Really cool!

Give it a try and let me know how you make out! :)

Re: Streaming video product

I set up video downloads for a client - no problem.
Now he wants to sell PPV streaming videos.

How did you make the connection between the html/flash video file and the product listing/purchase?

Re: Streaming video product

I created an HTML page that has a swish/flash file embeded.
I uploaded the html file and swf file.

I added the html as an attribute, I get to the html page when I purchase the product BUT the swf file does not play.

Anny ideas?

Re: Streaming video product

Any ideas on how to get an embedded file to play from a "download" link.

Download file = .html page with embedded wmv player & file.

The embedded file will only play if it is NOT in the download (protrected) directory.

Is there a way to get an embedded file to play from an html page that's downloaded?

Re: Streaming video product

Roland,

I have been tasked with doing the same thing. Seminar-style video has been produced, and they want to offer it for a price. But its not to be downloaded to the user's machine, only streamed.

Were you ever able to come up with a solid solution?

Thanks for any information you may provide.

Cheers!

Re: Streaming video product

I have created a modification that allows for video on demand(VOD) in zencart v1.3.9h.

With this modification you just treat a VOD just like any other downloadable product. If the video filename contains "vod_" then instead of downloading as usual, you will view the video in jwplayer.

All the same security with downloadables involving symlink is intact, so it will very difficult if not impossible to steal files or pass on the links. The workflow is almost identical to that with existing downloads feature except you get video on demand with zen cart.

Using a Fresh copy of using: v1.3.9h

I've been searching for over a week, my latest attempt trying to put my flv's outside webroot.

I want to add VOD to my site, can you tell me how it's done?

Thanks,

Dennis

Re: Streaming video product

I think I have it! Simplicity was the goal.

Create and load a directory for media, then modify .htaccess to disable directory listing and hotlinking.

Disabled download by redirection and enabled downloading by streaming. Install a media player, I use an FLVPlayer and sell FLV videos. Create an html and embed your video. Save it in downloads.

Now create a product in Zencart selling the html you created.

I still need to make a minor modification to the Zen php to have html sent to the browser not download when the download button is hit.

The videos cannot be directly accessed because of the hotlink protection. The videos remain hidden because of .htaccess disabling of directory listing. The html to play the video is under normal ZenCart protection because it is kept in the downloads directory.

I haven't found anyway a user can watch a video without paying for it YET.

PS. I have also disabled caching in .htaccess to keep a user from easily, paying for it once then keeping a physical copy.

If anyone can see anything I am missing please let me know.

Re: Streaming video product

Careful though, if they have the latest version of Realplayer installed, a button will appear over any video on any page and normally allows them to download any content.

Re: Streaming video product

By using an embedded jwplayer, I dont think you will be able to easily download videos to realplayer or anything else.

My modification is a simply a new module that renders an obfuscated jwplayer instead of download dialog box. There is a little more than that. The product download page under "my account" needs to be modified using an iframe to bring in the player if the download contains "vod_" and some .htaccess magic is also needed to make it work with symlinks.

Feel free to contact me if I can help you.
