    Default User Tracking - Slow

    Hello Experts :

At times the User Tracking seems to be very slow, it may take minutes to dispaly. I have at times gone into MYSQL and deleted all the entries in the table for user tracking, and all is well afterwards. There is usualy only about 2000 or so rows in the table at the time I deleted them, I didn't think that was excessive.

Is this normal behaviour from the User Tracking Module?

Another curious item is when I Select "View Session" from within the list I get bumped out of the Admin session and I have to log back in again, once logged in again I can view the the session in the "user tracking", however, any subsequent calls to "View Session" from within user tracking will bump me out again.

    Any ideas on that one?

Thanks again experts for all your help.

Yes, I have noticed for a long time that User Tracking is as slow as you say. I recently saw another thread for the User Tracking mod where someone offered some code suggestion to help speed it up....the criticism was that there was a part of the UT mod that was not written as well as it could have been. Do a search for the User Tracking contrib and you can see what the recommendation is.

Also in User Tracking configuration you can limit the number of sessions from each day to view.....you might want to lower the number from what it currently is at to reduce your wait.

I also get bumped out when trying to view a session every once in a while. I believe that the bumping out of ZC admin is a mystery that has no answer quite yet. I usually open a "view session" in a new window (or tab in FF) so that if I get bumped out of that window I don't have to wait for User Tracking to load back up again.

At times there seems to be no country information displayed in the results from “User Tracking”, and coincidently this also seems to be the time that there are delays in displaying the information. To support this notion, there was a noticeable time to display the information between a few minutes ago and earlier this morning when there were items without country information. Could there be a delay in response from the WHOIS URL when it can’t find the regional information in turn causing a delay in displaying the “User Tracking”?

What you say might be true, but I think the obvious answer is that earlier in the day fewer sessions have been generated so it will take less time. When I check my user tracking soon after midnight the results are displayed rather quickly, but when I check after my maximum sessions quota is met, it can take a long time.

I just posted an update to the mod ... it's now in the downloads area (under Admin Tools)

It has a switch now to disable the gethostbyaddr() call if you want to skip the time-consuming lookups. You can enable/disable this switch in the User Tracking Config area as needed.

Also included the suggested index keys for the database table to help improve performance.

Granted, a number of parts of the code should be rewritten, but this is a bandage until someone undertakes the task of a rewrite.
