Sort by Material?

Hello,
Im starting an online jewelry store. I want my customers to be able to sort by material such as gold or platinum or silver. I want a seperate sidebox that has those 3 categories. Im assuming the material would be an attribute. So is there a way i can have an attributes sidebox?

Not positive of exactly what you are seeking or thinking about for a sort by material...

If in your product description you state in silver or gold or platinum and or any other types of classes of items i.e. ruby, emerald, diamond stc. then using the search will locate and present all of the located items....don't know if this would be sufficient as a sorter.

Why not create 3 categories and link the relevant products? How often do you have the same item available in the different metals? That's really where attributes are useful - different choices on a basic, but specific, item.
