    Directory to Copy Files too

I have upgraded my site numerous times before but I have had a serious brain fart today!

Could someone tell me if I can copy the new install files to say:

    www.xxxx.com/temp/zen/complete file site here

and then run the install upgrade my live shop at

    www.xxx.com/zenshop

or do I need to copy the install files over my live site and replace the existing files before I upgrade?

A review of the upgrading instructions in your /docs/ directory should get you back on the right track.

    No it doesn't.

I know how to ftp, extract, run installs etc but my question was specific and it is not covered in the documents.

If I copy the full file set to directory 1 when my live shop exists in directory 2 will the zc_install process upgrade my live shop if I provide the locations of the live shop.

Or if I run the zc_install process will it just make a live shop in the directory 1?

There are only really two files "installed" by Zc_install. The two configure files are created when Zc_install is run. They are created in specific directories based on the root directory for the Zc_install.
In your case (www.xxxx.com/temp/zen/complete) they would be in www.xxxx.com/temp/zen/complete/admin/includes and www.xxxx.com/temp/zen/complete/includes.

The database can reside anywhere as long as the location is properly referenced in those configure files.

Just roll with the flow and make the test site work first.

ALSO, if Confucius were still around, I believe he'd say something like, "He who upgrade live site at night, have dead site in morning!"

When and or if you want to upgrade the live site then yes the files require being present/overwritten in the live directories.

BUT...as has been eluded to; you can create another DB and folder for the upgrade and when finished as you want; there are only 2 files to edit to make it your live site, of course then renaming the Zen root folder or by a redirect so that your customers book marks contunue to work.
