If you add all your products in a horizontal manner (all balls, all jerseys, all Jackets),
then you can create another category and link to them vertically (all Liverpool balls, all Liverpool jerseys, all Liverpool jackets). Will this do the trick?

Can't quite visualise what you mean, can you explain a bit further?

Try this: create a new category called (say) Liverpool. Then go back
to your (say) Jerseys category, and look at all the products. One on
of them, press the blue circle that says "C" (for Copy).
In the Copy To section on the right hand side of the screen, click
under categories and find "Liverpool." This will create a linked product;
updates in one area will be reflected in the other. So in this way, you
can cross organize your stock along many different lines.
