But I have fully functional 2 and 3 state CSS buttons using the sliding door method as mentioned above. Also working here:

I did this with a minimal amount of core changes - actually just one function replacement if I remember correctly, and a couple edits.
The real work was in the button creation and css markup. I can send you my sample buttons, css files, and <few> core mods.
