Default Is it worth updating ??

    Hi,
I have version 1.3.0.1 and it is running perfectly with no dramas at all. I told myself I would not put myself through the pain and hassel of updating the system but when I see the security dramas I feel a bit scared.
I look at the update info and I find that there are a HEAP of dramas with people loosing info and databases and things not working ect....

Is it really worth the pain ?

Lots of fixes ... see http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45162
Plus, the next set of changes will be built on top of this - and it will be increasingly
difficult to get people to help you if you have problems but you're not upgraded,
because they don't want to spend time on problems that have already been fixed.

    Good luck,
    Scott

Is there a dickhead way of upgrading from 1.3.0.1 to the latest STABLE version ??
I just dont want the dramas of having something not working and spending hours and hours of changing things and mucking around getting things to work... It would be good if there was just a security update that I could download to fix it... I am pretty happy with the features that 1.3.0.1 has now... but the security from what I am reading is a little ordinary.

Drama is unavoidable in this life. There is a greek chorus behind you right now telling you to update. :)

    Is it secure?
Even the mighty Cisco has been hacked. The advantage to staying up to date is that you're getting the latest, best thinking of a lot of people - a lot of really smart people, btw - about how to avoid it.

    Is it stable?
You have to follow the forum and keep an eye on the bug report thread that Dr. Byte maintains. I can tell you for a fact that a number of problems that I have experienced have been fixed. Have new problems been introduced? Almost certainly - but their number is fewer than the problems that have been resolved. ZenCart has not yet reached the state where fixing one problem creates another one somewhere else - see Brooks, _The Mythical Man Month_.

    Good luck,

I'm thinking about writing a program to do this. See http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showth...497#post269497

Its not that difficult make sure the mods you use have been updated or be prepared to do the work updating them.

    then BACKUP, BACKUP & BACKUP.

I did the first site by copying the site to update to a separate folder, update that and add your mods & test, test, & test.

Once you are confident that all works BACKUP your site again, take it down for maintenance and do what you did to the test site.

Is it going to take some time, YES, (you could be there for hours depending on the mods you use), but if you keep backups you shouldn't have too many problems. After the first couple of updates it gets easier & less scary.

Test on a copy first to make sure you get it right and that it works right.

Whats an evening out of life, compared to what you will learn from the process and the confidence you will get out of it. (IMO)
