you have a blank line at the bottom of your includes/configure.php file.

Chances are that your FTP program has left all your files with double-spacing. This can make life ugly. You might want to check your FTP program to be sure that it doesn't upload *.php files as binary. It needs to treat them as Ascii or Text files.

yep, that was it. There were two extra blank lines at the bottom of the file.

Now, I have a kind of related question...

if I have the files set up as www.mydomain.com/coast, will it cause problems if I make a subdomain and have users use coast.mydomain.com?

You can set your site up like that if you like. You'll need to ensure that your configure.php files have the proper details to support it.
Namely the HTTP_XXXXXXX_SERVER and DIR_WS_XXXXXX_CATALOG settings.
