editing out category quantities

In the categories sidebox, beside each category is the number of items in the category in parentheses, (4), etc. I would like to edit this out for a specific template. Which files do I need to edit?

No need to edit any files.

In admin, go to Configuration -> My Store -> Show Category Counts. Set to false.

Thanks for your help lismith. But I think I still need to edit scripts, as my case seems a little more complex. I am trying to use a block style for these links, so the links appear one on top of the other. And this isn't happening in categories, though it's fine in information links. So I'm thinking I may also want to make use of the ul and li elements to render the category links as the information links are, perhaps include the category counts within the link itself, or other such tweaking, so it's looking like I do need to get at the code.
If anyone knows what files to look at, I would appreciate knowing.
