    Default Is Zen Cart possible with Xampp on W98?

    Is it really possible to install a trial Zen Cart in a 'localhost' virtual server, using Xampp version 1.5.4a on W98? I can't even get FileZilla up and running.
    Has someone - anyone - got any ideas about this, 'cos I've got 6 days left out of 21 to set up a demo!!!

    You might try EasyPHP. I found it pretty
    easy to use on Win98.

    Well ... I.ve done it!

    I don't know whether to leap about like Smeagol in the Sammath Naur or just metaphorically pat your feet in adulation, Tshooter. Thanks a bunch!

    I found the important thing was to ignore what the install text says about FTP and setting file permissions and just get on with it until the red notices go away.

    One thing to note is that EasyPHP help is always just a left click away on the taskbar and that the phpMyAdmin control panel on the EasyPHP Administration page at 'http :// 127.0.0.1/home/' under the <manage database> link and will allow you to get a database up and running. Perhaps this is because, unlike Xampp, EasyPHP actually creates a default database for you when it first installs.

    Anyway, thanks for that.

    I run xampp and the only problem I ever had was setting up virtual host, so that I could have the developments sites outside the xampp directory. I gave up on doing it that way. I just stick the zen cart directory in the htdocs directory in the xampp tree. I've done it so many times I can have xampp and a zen cart demo setup in 5 minutes.

    Yes, XAMPP is a much better product than EasyPHP - and there's a lot more support for it. But if you have your test site working with EasyPHP then stick with it.

    By the way - you shuldn't be using Win 98 if you are connecting to the Internet. Microsoft isn't supporting it with updates any more, and it was shot full of security holes anyway.

    So .. er, even if I have only got poor ol' W98 running on my machine, what will I be missing out on by running Zen Cart on EasyPHP instead of Xampp? Perhaps, if it's worth trying for the extra functionality, I should give Xampp another chance, now that I've got past the 'won't work' stage.

    The EasyPHP v1.8 package for Windows includes the following:

    * MySQL Database System - v4.1.9
    * Apache Web Server - v1.3.33
    * PHP Programming Language - v4.3.10
    * PHP MyAdmin Database Interface - v2.6.1

    * XAMPP for Windows
    The distribution for Windows 98, NT, 2000 and XP. This version contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP + PEAR, Perl, mod_php, mod_perl, mod_ssl, OpenSSL, phpMyAdmin, Webalizer, Mercury Mail Transport System for Win32 and NetWare Systems v3.32, JpGraph, FileZilla FTP Server, mcrypt, eAccelerator, SQLite, and WEB-DAV + mod_auth_mysql.

    Pratically speaking you probably won't notice much difference between the two but if you need more functionality its already there with xampp. I don't mind that xampp doesn't create a DB for me on install. I just go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ and I'm there. Don't mess with setting up virtual hosts just stick the zen cart directory in the xampp tree in the htdocs folder then the call to the cart would be http://localhost/WHAT_EVER_YOUR_CART_DIRECTORY_IS/
    Like I said in my previous post 5 minutes start to finish server install and zen cart. You also can with xampp set up apache and mySql to run as services and they will always be running in the background. Well you are running win98 probably old machine might not be good to run them all the time in the background when not working on you cart.

    Instead of fire up phpmyadmin, I used to create a blank directory in the folder directly.
    mysql\data\MY_TEST_DATABASE

    The results are the same, but it seems faster for me.
