Keep stock only for a single item.

I have a cart setup for a client that does custom printed/embroidered items. Everything is sent out when it is ordered so we don't keep inventory on anything. They now have a single item that they what to keep inventory on so that they can not sell more than what they physically have in stock.

I have done some basic searching in the forums and have not seen what I think I am looking for. Could somebody please walk me through what I should do to go about making this work correctly? The only mod I have installed is Admin Profiles. I am currently running version 1.3.0.2 - I am getting authorization to spend the time to upgrade soon (and keep Admin Profiles working Ok as there are no admin overrides) so that has not yet been done.

What we do on our site is to set the stock level high (99999) for items we custom make on order and set the actual stock level on items we do carry in bulk.

Ok, that is one way that would work but it surly can't be the best or only way can it? I mean:

• at some point the high count will finally run out catching some customer by surprise and you may not realise what is happening right away
• I will have to go and change every single item already in the store to use the high inventory level
• It is not really only keeping inventory on the inventory only item, but on everything.

I will use this if it is the only way, but is there a more correct way?
