Ok I copied the upgraded version over to my a test folder and tried PHP instead of sendmail. It looks like the new PHP thing is what fixes it as the 500 error goes away and it looks ok now. Is this a new standard? Most apps Ive used like Vbulletin, phpbb, CMS', etc use sendmail.. and the 1.3.5 zencart did too. I do have a linux host as well. The "correct" choice for email transport is COMPLETELY depending on your hosting environment.
PHP was added as another option since too many folks were having trouble with the standard "sendmail" due to weird and inconsistent server configurations.
If one doesn't work, try another. Or ask your host. They may not even know. It seems most don't. Thus, more flexibility was offered..
