Default Problems with downloading a sold product

I have configured a pdf file to be downloaded . Everything works just fine
until I try to download the file.
I get a message that it can't connect with the server and it gives the IP address of my computer as the servers IP. When I look in the downloads manager it gives me green light as if it see the file.

    What's up

Are you on windows or unix server?

    Redirect on or off?

    Size of file?

    Do small files work?

What is the name of the file on the server?

Are you using special characters or extra periods etc.?

Did you try to Zip it?

    What version of Zen Cart?

Was this a clean install or upgrade?

Do you see the green dot next to the download filename on the Attribute?

Is the file in the /download directory?

Is the /pub set to 777?

Should I assume there is no fix to this problem?

    Key question and no answer:
Are you on windows or unix server?

Did you try changing the setting in Configuration ... Attribute Settings ...
    Redirect OFF

window servers MUST have Redirect OFF

unix servers ONLY need Redirect OFF when your hosting site has not set up your site to properly handle the .htaccess file in the /pub ...

NOTE: Redirect ON is the safer method ... however, if you cannot get your hosting site to fix this properly on a unix server to recognize the .htaccess in the /pub then you will have to set Redirect to OFF ...

NOTE: Zipping files is a better method of managing the files ...

I'm on a Unix server and I have deleted all categories and also
    reloaded the program.

I don't know anything about redirect were would I turn it off?

Why would it try look for the server at my IP adress and not at the server where everything is stored?

The documents I have in the store are not sold they are Manuals free of
charge. The only reason I have them inside the store is to get feed back on who is downloading the documents
