I believe you go to the catagory and make sure you do not have an image at the catabory level.

thanks but the problem is I want the category's to have images (ie when choosing between all the possible categories I want the user to see a picture for each one) but once they are within the category I don't want it at the top of the page..

awesome, that's half the problem fixed. Now when I am in a specific product listing it shows an image at the top for the sub category that product is in. How do I get that to go away?
To turn it off inside a product-info page, Admin->Configuration->Product Info ... 3rd option
