I agree with Batteryman that a layout guide would be helpfull. I thankfully used the mentiones layout map with my 1.2x versions, as I do not know much about CSS.
In 1.3x versions I was completely lost with my layout, and spend a lot of time figuring out what was what.

My answer to Kobra's post: it would be impossible to cover everything. But a layout guide could at least give an impression of the way the CSS is setup, so newbies like me can get an idea of the system of the new CSS, and understand the basic selector groupings.

For details or different page specific items indeed firefox developer works great.

A css map or listings may help if you use it for study as the display not expected to be changed and static.
And you want to spend several months to study, test and trial each class, id, and don't forget they can be combined and some are compounded class or id.
Mind you there are about two thousands and only for the numbers of the basic classes and ids.

However, for styling a template or modify a site you will find that the map or listings will not bring must help. For the display are always relative and dynamic. It should refer to the particular pages, positions and sections and this always different from the sample map and listings.

With repeat to the advises given above, get some tools to help is the faster and easier way to go.

And, install a demo shop with the demo products and test, modify it and play around, this will shorten the learn curve tremendously.

More, follow the forum frequently will also hlep. For everyday there are many raised questions. They will sooner or later happen to you and you can learn before it can be the problems to you.

Even more, try help others and answer questions in the forum and this will be a great help for the learnings. By doing this and after a short peroid you will find that you will become a expert and with plenty of answers. And may even without the need of docs and references any more.

I can tell that, if you have the basic concepts and follow the advices above. You will find that many difficult problems can be solved within 15 - 30 min. and the easy one only need a couple.
