help question Selling Plastic Gift Certificates

I'm building an online store with Zen Cart. At the moment, the only products I need to sell online are plastic gift cards that can be applied towards the purchase of services not managed by the Zen Cart store. Customers need to be able to buy an X-dollar gift card, where X is any positive numerical value. Can this be done through Zen Cart? I've tried searching the forum, but can only find references to Zen Cart's virtual gift certificates, which don't seem to be what I'm looking for.

    Thanks,

    Steve

So you are essentially selling customers a standard product - a plastic card - and when they receive it they will find the code on it, right? It this is the case it would be treated like any other product that could be sold through Zen Cart.

i have a similar Problem. We also plan to start selling Plastic Gift cards. Each card has a certain value and a unique redemption code which is provided by the card provider. The cards can be used on our site, but only for certain products. How would i have to set this up?

There's nothing that needs to be modified to do what you're looking for... its pretty straight forward once you get used to ZenCart.

As mentioned above... there is nothing different between your gift cards and any other product like shoes, shirts, or bags of peanuts. The trick is going to be in the implementation of attributes.

If you only have a few denominations, then I would suggest ignoring attributes and simply set up a unique product for each value ($5, $10, $25, $50, etc). On the other hand, if you have many different values or custom values (the customer can buy $28.54 for example) then you'll want to set them up with attributes that allow this.

To handle the redemption codes... you'll need to use zen's coupons. For each one you sell, set up a coupon with the code and value associated with the card. You can certainly set up restrictions so they only work with certain products.

Spend some time playing with it... you'll figure it out.
