Store_sessions

I have read through a lot here, but I can't seem to answer my question, which is better, db or '' (cache directory)? Or is there a difference in performance? The reason I ask is that I have a very busy server with a lot of sites based on mysql and I am wondering if I switch can switch to file based sessions without any performance issues.
