Sort order for linked product?

If a product is linked into two categories, is it possible to assign a certain "sort order" for each? So it's on top of the page (a mainstay) in one category, and on the bottom of the page (complemenary) in another category. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Linked Product is 1 Product with 2 products_to_categories entries in the database where the master_categories_id on the Product is used for pricing purposes ... such as SaleMaker which bases its sales on Category ... which is managed via the master_categories_id to determin what Category "owns" the Product ...

Sort Order belongs to the Product itself ...

There isn't a Sort Order per Product based on Category ...

Can you give a real world example where there is a benefit to multiple Sort Orders on a Per Product Per Category basis?

Sorry Ajeh, I thought zencart has so many features, maybe I just couldn't find it.

A real-world example could be from my store - some products belong to "In Blossom" category - like jewelry made with real flowers. Some belong to "Swarovski" because they are made with Swarovski crystals. But many Swarovski products have flower-shaped beads, so they kind of fit the "flower" theme as well, so I thought I'd link them at the bottom of "In Blossom".

I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything, that's all.

I was trying to think of a work around for you ... but based on your example, there really isn't one ...

To have a separate sort order per Category would take quite a bit of custom coding ...

Sorting by Product Name or Price just isn't the best way for you, eh?

i wanted to do the same thing, as my client is picky about the order that products are displayed. i had hoped to find a way to assign different sort orders, but i found a work around.

for the catagory that the product was going to be towards the bottom, i gave it a sort order of 50, thus putting it at the bottom of my product list. for the catagory that the product was going to be at the top, i simply started the sort order at 50 and continued that catagory from there. seems to work ok so far.

I have a similar problem but a different work around, I don't like it but it is the best I can do on a short fuse project.


I have a Catagory called other xxxx products which has 6 sub catagories, and I am linking them to a specific product that has several catagories one of which is accessories.

The content of the Product accessories catagory is varies from major product to major product, so figuring out a numbering scheme to keep things sorted in the product accessories as in the master, for all the different projects is more than my poor brain can handle.

My file was to put in an index at the top of the accessories catgory using HTML and linking from this index directly to the specific product.

My "index" is in the order that these products show up elsewhere, so the look and feel of the site is consistant.

I am running in to a similar issue.. Very frustrating. I have a site with 2600 or so products. We sell welding supplies and there are lots of small parts that can be used with many other products. You can see it at www.arc-zone.com
I know this is something that would take quite a bit of modification but anyone have any solutions??
Is this something that might make it in to Version 1.4???

By the way, does anyone know when 1.4 will be released or have a features list for 1.4?

Pretty site ... kinda miss seeing the powered by Zen Cart on there for showing it off or adding it to the Show Case ...

Meanwhile, have you a couple Categories where the Products are Linked Products so that we can see the affect of how things are working now?

Ok back to the sort issue..

Here is one area where some advanced sorting would come in handy. As I mentioned before, we sell welding products.

Category 1 : Replacement wheels for grinders

Category 2 : The one of the grinders

This is an example at least..


Category 1 has ALL of the replacement wheels and they need to be sorting in a way that related products are together. Category 2 is for the actual grinder itself with all of its other replacement parts, including the wheels.
Now I know that I can get creative with the way I number the sort. The only issue is that in some categories there are so many it becomes almost impossible to manage.
