White space below logowrapper

I am just beginning to build a customized template. I see that this thread is referring to logowrapper in the stylesheet.
I thought that if we are starting out we should be using the default template and its stylesheet.
The Classic template, which I like the look of better than the default, has the logowrapper lines that have been in the thread.
The default template has what was in the Classic stylesheet for logowrapper scattered all over. It took me a very long time to see where the header background image was hidden.
So, I'm confused. Do I copy the default template files as written up as the correct way to go, or do I use the Custom template which seems to be a lot more like what I want my store to look like?
Another thing -- those colors in default are not my taste and again, they are scattered all over. I'd rather base my site on the Custom template. What's the harm?

"Custom" is just that ....Can be what you want....Have you looked at some of the "Start" templates available in the downloads section? They usually get one over the initial hump.

Yes, in tpl_header.php try removing that clearBoth and see if that helps

I tried doing that but mine doesn't say clearboth it only says clear... this is the link to our site .. www.vintage1.byethost10.com this is for my final project for school... our banner at the top has all the white around it and we want it to be black where the two spaces of white are we tried changing the clear both section and nothing happened any other suggestions...

Please, tell how you got rid of the white space on your site.

I had partial success by changing the BR to DIV and then it was fine. this only solved my lower gap below the banner and not the top one above the banner.
Seems odd?

If you have any luck clearing that gap up let me know.
