Item numbers in Order COnfirmation Email

I wanted to change my Order confirmation email (both to Customer and Store Owner) so that a serial number is displayed in front of each item (in the Product section). This is true for both single item order or multiple order item. The serial numbers should reset for each order (start from 1) and should not carry forward for different orders.

Has anyone done this or does anyone know how it can be done.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Adding a line-item number in your confirmation email will require custom coding of the send_order_email() element of the order class.

I understand that there will be custome coding. If there is somebody out there that has done something similar, would aprciate if they could share that knowledge.

Would also appreciate if somebody could point me to the file and block of code that would need to be changed.
