Newbie - What do I use to edit/create templates?

I am used to using a program like FrontPage to create and edit pages. I have followed all the steps to override all the necessary files so that I can create custom templates. But what do I use to create them? I've been poking around the EZ-Pages menu and the Developers Kit but can't find anywhere we I can go to a page and start customizing it.

I know Frontpage is not recommend for Zen-Cart which is fine. I keep seeing things in the FAQ like "edit in your text editor". Do I need to download/purchase a PHP editor or something?

Templates are not interactive as FrontPage text is. and there is not way to pull up a document that you can in plain english describe what you want.

The basics are to create a template_info.php file with your custom name inside it.
Place it in your created directory. Additionally, any files and or folders that are in template_default that you need to edit also are placed in this custom folder.

Thi becomes your template.

You can find several free beginning templates in the download area that might assist you in understanding this structure and how to create your own.
