Is it possible to move selected sideboxes up into the header area? For example, if I wanted to put my Categories sidebox beside my logo or something to that effect.

You can disable the categories sidebox in your admin > tools > layout boxes controller.
Then in admin > config > layout settings > Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF > set to "1" and this will move your categories to the header area.
Others would require more in depth code alterations
