Go to your Admin> Layout Setting and turn on all of the 6 banner positions available using the Banner Group "Wide Banners". See if one of them would work better than messing in the code.

good idea.. i'll try that... however, i still assume i am going to have to mess with the code since i want it at the top of the page... but i will try that....
