Idea or Suggestion My One Step Checkout System...

I have had a number of customers enter their billing information, then half way through the checkout process, abandon their carts. I have PayPal set up, so checkout + paypal is quite a lot of clicking for the average customer. All in I have lost quite a bit of revenue just through people abandoning the checkout stage.

Anyway, I decided to merge all 3 checkout steps, which I have done successfully. I don't need a number of the different inputs, and I have changed the "billing" and "shipping" information so they show up on the checkout page as standard.

So my 1 step checkout is up and running and working great.

However... I have changed all the relevant values that I can see, to ensure that when an item is bought, the user goes direct from "shopping cart" to "login" to "checkout confirmation".

BUT!! This is where it gets bizarre. I have now spent about 5 hours going through code, trying to make sure I did it all right. However, when I buy an item, and log in, it always directs me to "Checkout Step 1"... I tried removing the anti-hack code in the header.php file for "checkout_confirmation" but that didn't do it. I've removed all references to "checkout_shipping" from every file that could be having an effect. And still nothing! Does anyone know what I should be changing to make sure that, from the "log in" page, I go directly to "Checkout_Confirmation"? Oh another quirk, if you're already logged in and try to buy something, you DO go to the checkout confirmation

Any help from the hardcore coders would be vastly appreciated. I'm sure it's just a little detail I have missed. All I want is for the customer to be able to build a cart, go to login, go to confirmation and be done, and the only code I need is from the "login" page to the "confirmation" page instead of the "shipping" page.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know. For testing purposes (should anyone be so inclined) feel free to use the following user name:

    Thanks!!

Grrrr!! I found some bugs. Namely not being able to click through to PayPal so scratch all the above! I've restored the original cart for now, so will be doing some testing / rewriting after christmas.

Looks like you are "Assuming" paypal payment. What if there were more than one payment? how would it work?

It only works with one payment system, but you could set it up for several, by having an edit button next to the payment method, that redirects to the payment page. That pretty much defeats the point though. I think most people use only one payment method, and it's great for me, cuz I only use paypal. What did you think of the system in general?

ehh i dont know many stores that use only one payment method, especially not just paypal. Plus if they are using credit card they would need to enter their info.

a better bet would be to take the content of the payment page and add it to the confirmation page so you could actually do the selection from that page. This way you could have many payment times. Do the same for shipping so you can have many shipping options.

    I would have to disagree,
the majority of places I shop online offer CC and at least one other payment method,

Fair enough. I developped the system to meet my personal needs, but to include all payment options shouldn't be too hard. If I develop this it won't be for a little while, things are very busy just at present. I had been planning also to have GV options on the page, so... it sounds like what is needed is a single page checkout, with functions that can be controlled from admin, such as what payment options should be displayed, what shipping options etc.

    Sound good?

Idea or Suggestion Re: My One Step Checkout System...

I think you are on to something good. Zen cart is in the need of a one step check out system. A model to look at is how Volusion is doing it. I looked at their demo store and the checkout is on one page with 4 sections:

    1 Billing info
    2 shipping info
    3 shipping method
    4 payment method

submit and you are done. I think this should be on the wish list for a future release. A mod that would achieve the same thing would be great too. Thank you for initiating this.

Anybody else think this would be great? :))
