Confused about attributes...

I have a store and I sell memorabilia. Until now I had no need for attributes. People ordered the items, which were one of a kind, no problem.

Now I have products that people must choose Length and Sizes, etc. I have no clue how to add this to the items in the store. Can someone please help me figure it out?

One product type has Bats that are in different lengths. Others have sizes. I do not know how to create custom attributes that say what I want them to say (Specific inches). Can someone help?
