If you want to use an advertising banner, you can use the Banner manager.

well I got the banner half way. I dont know why but its on the bottom of the page. I wanted it on the top of the page. where it says sales message goes here. I am not sure how to get it there. I am sure your all pulling your hair out reading this. I am new to this and am trying my hardest to wrap my brain around this. I think just a light shove in the right direction is all I need.
I have read on this forum that you need to go to the includes/languages/etc,etc,etc for a number of the same applications (changing congrats you have installed,Sales message goes here, and other types of things)
Now from what I have read and maybe I am not understanding this correctly you have to have a seperate text editor not in the admin panel that you put them into and then upload them from there to your website. am I correct on this. if I am what is the best way to go about getting this set up.
I do aplogize for such simple questions which I am sure they are to more savvy zenners. But I will tell you one thing I sure in the heck am learning alot and having a ball with this. This forum is very helpful and informative.
Please help me out so I may continue to enjoy this process and save the last bit of hair on my head from being pulled out.

Try using Banner Display Groups - Header Position 2. You will still need to remove the text for the Sales Message from the language file.

allrilght I think I found the banner settings, from the admin-config-layout settings. that is where I found diff banner headers. I selected the banner position 2 and hit it and where it has the blank to put the banner header group in there. I typed what I named my banner. is that right? now I do not know how to go in and get rid of the text, I cannot find the language file.

    Hello,
you need to open the zen cart zip file locally
    find the includes/languages/english/
    folder
from there you will change index.php and metatags.php

you will then save them into a new folder that you create that has the same name as your template.

then you will upload em to the server in the same file structure.
you also need to remember to go into the admin and turn ON your new template in

admin -> tools -> template manager

I think you're having trouble because of a terminology confusion problem.

In the webdesign world, the term "banners" typically refers to a short, wide graphic image stretching across the page FOR THE PURPOSE of advertising a related product or to drive customers to click on links to other websites for which you get credit by sending customers. "Banner Ads" is also a term directly related.

What *you* are talking about is "header text" ... ie: the default "Sales Message Goes Here". In fact, in Zen Cart, that default text is actually a "tagline" and is editable in the PHP file mentioned in the documentation you've been reading and the responses you've been getting via various posts.

Technically the changes you're trying to make relate to templating and customization.

You need to read the getting-started materials to get a handle on how the various files in the Zen Cart package work together and how to make the changes you need.
