Had the same problem just recently. I would first recommend to download and use TEXTPAD. It's free. Upload your meta_tags.php file to your computer and open with TEXTPAD. I would assume you'll see everything on one line. If so, you can install zen cart into another source on your website, example: www.yoursite.com/shop and upload the meta_tags.php file from there and edit it with the said software above. Then download to your main zen cart page and it should fix the problem.

The other way would be to delete and reinstall zen cart in your main location and use the software to edit it. Worked perfectly for me and I hope it does the same for you.

Notepad++ and Crimson Editor are both excellent for editing php files and won't insert unwanted characters or spaces like some other editors (like Word). Both are free downloads from the net.
