    Default public_html or www?

Post upgrade (to 1.3.6) I now have two copies of my store in two folders at the root level: public_html and www.
What is the difference between the two and in which folder do I make changes such as adding new product photos, new modules etc.?

And another related question - Now when I'm working in the admin, I'm receiving error messages such as the following:
Error: I can not write to this file. Please set the right user permissions on: /public_html/shop/includes/languages/english/html_includes/define_main_page.php
While I can certainly set and re-set the permissions, is it necessary to do this all the time? I realize that this is a security issue but is there a happy medium where I can be mostly secure but also not have to bounce back and forth setting permissions? If so, which main folders should be set and to what? 777? (and in which file: public_html or www?)

Oww - my head hurts But it is nice to be on this end of the upgrade!

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Hi Tim,
the www. is a sym of the public_html.

there really is no happy medium,
upi need 777 on the images folder and the define pages folder,
these are the only ones that you really have to change and then only when you make changes.

Thanks for your responses - Question: I have all of my modified "define" pages (define_main_page.php etc.) in my template override folder. However, when I access these pages via the admin to make changes I'm still getting the following error: Error: I can not write to this file. Please set the right user permissions on: etc.

I can avoid this error by changing permissions of each .php page individually but shouldn't I be able to have permissions set for the folder?

Yes you need to set the permissions for each file but you need to change the folders as well.
