index vs product list page???

I want the index page to be the only page to have an image on the left with some text but when i click on a catagory and the page goes to the list of products, it still shows the image. I need to know if the page that apears when i click on a catagory can use a different layout. It seems like the index and the page one goes to when they click on a catagory use the same page because when i try to hide sideboxes on the index it hides them on the product display page to ??
