product display order by id

Hi -
I know there are many posts on product display order but I can't quite get this...
I want the products to display by EITHER id OR Model (I've tried both ways). There are several places to make this happen... could someone give a rundown on the various places to set this order. ID would be just fine... if harder, MODEL ok too. I have set in product listing and other places but it still comes up in alpha order by name.

Normally when setting up a product you can specify the order and use/force it to display in this order.

For this purpose, numbers like 10, 20 ,30....are applied and this leaves several in between for future adds and/or re-ordering

but how do you change the product id..
and how do you force the display to be according to id?

The Product ID is auto incremented and is determined by the database. You can not change it. If you wish to sort by it then make your sort order number the same as the PID

I am making this harder than it has to be.
The sort order is right there for me.
Wish I had a nickel for every dumb mistake I'm making but I really am loving this cart.
