There shouldn't be any need to customize to achieve this. It's built in and should run by default.
A couple of things to check.
- Do you have javascript turned off in your browser (dumb I know but I've done it)?
- Is your modules/pages/check_account/jscript_form_check.php file present and correct?

I found the problem. I had an error near the top of the jscript_form_check.php file which was causing the rest of the script to fail! Thanks for the help!
