    Default Installing Updates

    Hey Everyone,

I was recently hired on as a Serigraph Printer for a company here in Tuscaloosa. I’ve got a bit of web experience (www.TheArtOfBradSmith.com), but I’ve never before used ZenCart. Over the past month or so, I’ve tried to learn a little bit, but the version of Zen Cart I’m using is out of date, making a lot of the answers to FAQ’s useless to me.

For example – I was looking to remove the "Welcome Guest" greeting, but could not find the Customer Greeting subcategory in the Admin/Layout Settings branch. It isn’t there.
I clicked "Check for Updates" and see that "New Version Available V1.3.7" is there to download...

Here’s my question, and it may not be a totally stupid question, but I’m feeling like an inquisitive idiot asking this – but can anyone tell me how to go about installing the "Update"?
The website is (www.RickRushArt.com), and as you can see – it needs a little bit of work.

Thanks in advance for your patience with me,

    Brad

    Hi Brad,

The greeting isn't changed in the admin. You'd change that in one of the files (using overrides, of course). Some of that is explained in the FAQ/wiki.

The safest way to upgrade is to install the newest version of ZC in a different directory (as not to disturb a working store), get the template straightened out (which should be fairly easy since the currently one is simple), update the store and then run the install to upgrade the DB.

I know that probably sounds like gibberish, but I've done it that way and it works like a charm.

Okay, so updating won't give me more options in the Admin section? That's a bummer - I'm pretty hesitant to do much editing to the actual website's "guts" since it isn't my site, you know?

I'll try as you suggested, though - sounds safe.

What options were you looking for in the admin?

Since you're new to ZC, your best bet is to install ZC somewhere and play with it. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to update easily.

Options like removing the Greeting, for example. Making changes from the /admin is alot easier than I'm thinking editing the template will be. At the moment, I'm totally overwhelmed by it all, to be honest.

I wasn't the person that set it all up to begin with, which is why my expression is something like...

    Brad,

I know it seems a bit intimidating at the moment, but there is a method to the madness and having mulitple language capability is accomplished through the file based language defines at this time. Have a peek at the tutorials and FAQs, it will help.
